Good vanity lighting should make grooming easier without making the bathroom feel cold. The goal is balanced light on the face, enough brightness near the mirror, and a fixture scale that fits the vanity.
Start with the mirror width
A horizontal vanity light often looks best when it is slightly narrower than the mirror or vanity. For double vanities, two fixtures or a wider multi-light fixture can make the layout feel more balanced.
Place light near face level when possible
Side-mounted sconces give very flattering light because they reduce shadows under the eyes and chin. If side sconces are not practical, an overhead vanity light can still work well when it is centered over the mirror and paired with a warm bulb.
Watch shade direction
Downward-facing shades focus light onto the counter. Upward-facing shades bounce light into the room and can feel softer. Clear glass gives more sparkle, while frosted glass and fabric-like shades diffuse brightness.
Choose a finish that handles moisture
Bathrooms need finishes that are easy to wipe and practical for everyday humidity. Brass, chrome, black metal, glass, and sealed finishes are common choices. Always follow the product's damp or wet location rating before installation.
Keep color temperature warm but clear
Many bathrooms work best around 3000K. It is warm enough to feel comfortable but clear enough for grooming. If the bathroom has no natural light, avoid bulbs that are too yellow or too cool.
